Have you every watched young kids play organized soccer? I mean kids too young to play positions, where all you see is a loosely-bound gaggle following a migrating ball. This shrieking swarm is actually an impressive display of shared intelligence. Despite the best efforts of responsible dog owners, you occasionally find a poop not scooped. When this swarm happens across such a hazard for the first time, the information is immediately shared and all members inherently work to maintain a safe exclusion zone.
I've seen managers do the same thing.
Leaders do not have this option. When leaders come across shit, they do not have the luxury of declaring "this is not mine". They are obligated to pick it up. They are accountable to own it until it finds a home.
Next time you see shit at work, what will you do?
